MIL-STD-810 — Drop, shock, and vibration protection

Military Standard 810 (currently MIL-STD-810H, sometimes listed as MIL-STD-810G for older certifications) is a United States Department of Defense testing standard establishing methods for replicating real-world environmental stress conditions. A case carrying this certification has been subjected to documented laboratory testing — not simply declared durable by its manufacturer.

Test methods most relevant to device cases:

  • Method 516 — Shock (Procedure IV, Transit Drop): The device is dropped from a specified height (typically 1.2 m / 4 ft) onto concrete at multiple orientations. The device must remain functional. Reputable manufacturers state the drop height tested, not just the standard name.
  • Method 514 — Vibration: Tests resistance to sustained mechanical vibration — relevant to vehicle-mounted devices, logistics, and industrial use.
  • Methods 501/502 — High and low temperature: Tests performance across thermal extremes, relevant for outdoor and cold-chain environments.
  • Method 510 — Sand and dust: Tests resistance to fine particle ingress under airflow conditions.

Important: MIL-STD-810 defines the test methodology, not a single pass/fail threshold. A case labelled “MIL-STD-810 tested” should specify which methods were applied and from what height. The phrase “military-grade” without a specific standard reference is a marketing claim, not a certification.

IP Ratings — Dust and liquid ingress protection

Ingress Protection (IP) Ratings are defined by IEC standard 60529, published by the International Electrotechnical Commission. The rating uses the prefix IP followed by two digits, each measuring a different dimension of protection against environmental ingress. Higher numbers indicate higher protection.

First digit — Solid particle protection (0–6)

  • 0 — No protection
  • 1 — Objects >50mm (e.g. hands)
  • 2 — Objects >12.5mm (e.g. fingers)
  • 3 — Objects >2.5mm (tools, thick wires)
  • 4 — Objects >1mm (most wires, fasteners)
  • 5 — Dust protected: limited ingress, no harmful deposit
  • 6 — Dust-tight: complete protection against all particle ingress

A first digit of 6 is required for cases used in dusty environments — construction, mining, agriculture, dry outdoor work, or any setting with fine airborne particles.

Second digit — Liquid ingress protection (0–9K)

  • 0 — No protection
  • 1 — Dripping water, vertical only
  • 2 — Dripping water at up to 15° tilt
  • 3 — Spray water up to 60° from vertical
  • 4 — Splash water from any direction
  • 5 — Low-pressure water jets from any direction
  • 6 — High-pressure water jets from any direction
  • 7 — Immersion to 1m for up to 30 minutes
  • 8 — Immersion beyond 1m (depth and duration specified by manufacturer)
  • 9K — High-pressure, high-temperature wash-down (industrial)

Common IP ratings — what they mean in practice

  • IP54 — Dust protected + splash resistant from any direction. Light outdoor use, light rain, general handling.
  • IP65 — Dust-tight + low-pressure water jets. Outdoor work, wet cleaning environments, light industrial.
  • IP67 — Dust-tight + waterproof to 1m / 30 minutes. Field work, healthcare, outdoor programs, most demanding settings.
  • IP68 — Dust-tight + waterproof beyond 1m (manufacturer-specified, typically 2m / 1 hour). Aquatic environments, heavy rain, submersion risk.
  • IP69K — Dust-tight + high-pressure, high-temperature wash-down. Food service, industrial wash-down, veterinary, laboratory.

Water-resistant and waterproof are not interchangeable. IP54 will not protect a device from immersion even briefly. Always match the second digit to your actual use environment, not to a general sense of “rugged”.

Manufacturer claims vs independent certification

A product can be marketed as “water resistant” or “drop tested” without holding any formal certification. When specifying cases for a professional fleet or funded environment, look for published IP or MIL-STD-810 certification with specific test method references. Reputable brands publish test documentation or state the standard, method, and test conditions applied. If this information is not available, treat the claim with caution and request evidence before committing to a volume purchase.

Choosing the right case for your environment

Match the case to the device ecosystem

Apple iPad and Samsung Galaxy tablets have the broadest range of quality rugged cases, mounts, and accessories. Waterproof vs splash-resistant: specify correctly
